ABOUT US

  • The Crime Victims' Rights Council was organized in 1997 in an effort to promote the annual Crime Victims' Rights Week ceremony. Through the years, our goals and mission have changed to meet the ever-changing needs of crime victims in our community.

  • Our main purpose is to organize the annual Crime Victims Memorial Walk held in April every year and the Crime Victims Memorial Project. However, we also strive to promote victims' rights, increase public awareness surrounding issues affecting victims, find alternatives to better serve victims, and promote fellowship and involvement among local agencies.

  • As a council, we have grown and formalized, now having 11 directors serving three-year terms and comprised of over fifty agencies and victim advocate partners. The council is actively involved in assisting and promoting other agencies projects, thereby increasing the knowledge of victimization.
  • This council has been instrumental in developing a lapel pin that is now used statewide symbolizing crime victims.

  • Our community has also been recognized statewide for our ability to bring agencies together to work cooperatively. This is direct result of this council.

  • The Council meets the third Wednesday of every month at the State Office Building, 401 E. Franklin Room 3rd floor conference room at 3:30 pm and everyone interested in furthering the rights of victims of crime is welcome. For meeting information call (915) 521-7106.

PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS

  • The Domestic Violence Prevention Commission was organized to recognize the needs of victims of family violence and to promote programs to educate the public and other agencies about this crime. The DVPC publishes a free pocket brochure with helpful numbers and information. The Commission meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 3:30 in the afternoon . Everyone interested in stopping the violence is welcome. For meeting information call (915) 546-2091.
  • The West Texas Crisis Consortium was organized to bring agencies together to assist the communities in West Texas in the case of disaster or large scale criminal events. The Consortium has many partner agencies and works closely with the Red Cross, Salvation Army and the City, County and State Emergency Management. The Consortium meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Rio Grande Council of Governments at 3:00 pm. For more information call (915) 521-7984.
